Life does not always move in a straight line. For many adults, finishing high school gets delayed because of work, family responsibilities, financial hardship, health challenges, military service, housing instability, or simply trying to survive day-to-day life. But delaying your education does not mean you missed your opportunity.

Every year, adults across Maryland return to school through programs like the Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake Excel Center to earn their high school diploma and create new opportunities for themselves and their families. Some are 25 and trying to gain momentum after difficult early years. Others are 35 and looking to break out of low-wage jobs. Some are 45 and ready to prove to themselves that it is never too late to grow.

Starting over can feel overwhelming, especially when you compare yourself to where you think you “should” be by now. But rebuilding your future does not happen all at once. It happens through a series of practical, intentional steps.

No matter your age, the process usually comes down to three things:

Establishing your education baseline

Aligning your skills with today’s workforce

Building a realistic income strategy

Here is exactly how to approach each step.

Step 1: Establish Your Education Baseline

Before you can move forward, you need an honest picture of where you are starting.

For adults returning to school, this is often the hardest emotional step. Many people carry embarrassment or regret about not finishing high school earlier. Others worry they have forgotten how to learn or that they are “too old” to go back.

The truth is that adult learners often perform better than they expect because they bring life experience, discipline, resilience, and purpose into the classroom. Unlike teenagers who may feel forced to attend school, adult students usually return because they understand what is at stake.

At 25, your focus may be on correcting early setbacks and creating stability. At 35, you may be balancing work, children, and financial obligations while trying to improve your career options. At 45, your motivation may come from wanting better opportunities, greater confidence, or simply finishing something important that was left incomplete years ago.

The first goal is not perfection. The first goal is momentum.

That means:

Assessing your current academic level

Understanding what credits or coursework may transfer

Identifying scheduling needs and barriers

Creating a realistic weekly routine

Building support systems around childcare, transportation, and time management

One of the biggest mistakes adults make is assuming they need to figure everything out before they begin. They do not.

Programs like the Excel Center are specifically designed for adult learners because traditional educational models often do not fit adult lives. Flexible scheduling, career support, coaching, and understanding instructors can make the difference between quitting and succeeding.

Most importantly, earning a high school diploma is not just about a piece of paper. It changes how employers view you, how you view yourself, and what opportunities become available moving forward.

Step 2: Align Your Skills With Today’s Workforce

Once your education foundation is underway, the next step is identifying where your skills can create real economic opportunity.

This is where many adults get stuck. They think only in terms of jobs they have already done rather than skills they already possess.

A person who spent years raising children may have stronger organizational and crisis-management skills than they realize. Someone who worked in retail likely developed communication, problem-solving, sales, and customer service experience. A warehouse worker may already understand logistics, operations, and teamwork.

The key is learning how to connect those existing abilities to growing industries and career pathways.

At 25, this may mean identifying an entry-level career with advancement potential instead of bouncing between temporary jobs.

At 35, it may involve shifting from physically demanding work into careers that offer more stability, benefits, and long-term growth.

At 45, it could mean leveraging years of practical experience while updating digital skills and industry certifications.

Today’s workforce rewards adaptability. Employers increasingly value reliability, communication skills, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities alongside formal education.

That is why skill alignment matters so much.

Ask yourself:

What industries are growing in my area?

Which careers offer sustainable wages and advancement?

What certifications or training can I complete within six months to two years?

Which of my current strengths transfer into those careers?

What work environment actually fits my personality and lifestyle?

Many adults returning to school discover that they are capable of far more than they originally believed. Sometimes the issue was never intelligence. It was lack of opportunity, support, confidence, or direction.

The good news is that skills can be built at any age.

Technology, healthcare, skilled trades, logistics, customer service leadership, manufacturing, transportation, office administration, and healthcare support fields continue to offer opportunities for adults willing to learn and adapt.

The most important thing is to stop viewing yourself through the lens of your past mistakes and start evaluating yourself based on your future potential.

Step 3: Build an Income Strategy

Education without a financial plan can leave people frustrated. The goal is not simply to earn a diploma. The goal is to create a more stable and sustainable life.

That requires an income strategy.

An income strategy is different from simply “getting a job.” It means thinking intentionally about how your education, skills, and work choices will support your long-term goals.

At 25, your strategy may focus on building earning power quickly while avoiding unnecessary debt.

At 35, your focus may center on supporting children, securing benefits, or finally moving beyond paycheck-to-paycheck living.

At 45, financial priorities may include retirement preparation, healthcare stability, or reducing physical strain from labor-intensive work.

Regardless of age, several principles matter:

Focus on Progress, Not Immediate Perfection

Too many people delay action because they believe they need the perfect career plan before moving forward. In reality, progress creates clarity.

A better-paying entry-level job can create breathing room. A diploma can open doors that were previously closed. A certification can lead to confidence and momentum.

Small wins compound over time.

Avoid Dead-End Cycles

One of the hardest realities adults face is becoming trapped in survival mode. Low wages, unstable schedules, and lack of advancement opportunities can create constant stress and burnout.

Breaking that cycle often requires short-term sacrifice for long-term gain. That may mean attending evening classes, adjusting schedules, or temporarily stepping outside your comfort zone.

But staying stuck also carries a cost.

Learn Basic Financial Stability Skills

Returning to school and improving your career prospects should also include practical financial education:

Budgeting realistically

Building emergency savings

Improving credit

Managing debt carefully

Understanding benefits and taxes

Planning for long-term financial goals

Financial stability is rarely built overnight. It is usually created through consistent habits and steady improvements over time.

Build Relationships and Networks

Opportunity often comes through people as much as credentials.

Career coaches, instructors, classmates, employers, mentors, and workforce development programs can all help open doors. Adults returning to school should not isolate themselves or assume they need to succeed alone.

Successful people ask questions. They seek guidance. They stay connected.

Starting Over Is Not Starting From Nothing

One of the biggest misconceptions about returning to school later in life is the idea that you are “behind.”

You are not starting from zero.

You are starting with life experience, perspective, resilience, and a deeper understanding of why education matters. Those things have value.

The path may look different at 25 than it does at 35 or 45, but the core principle remains the same: your future can change dramatically when you commit to improving your education, aligning your skills, and creating a realistic financial strategy.

The hardest part is often taking the first step.

But for many adults, that first step becomes the moment everything begins to change.

Earning your high school diploma is more than a personal achievement, it’s a launchpad for new opportunities. In Maryland, industries are growing fast and looking for motivated and skilled workers to fill essential roles.

Typical Pay Range: $35,000–$50,000 per year, depending on role and location.

Why It’s Growing: Maryland’s aging population and expanding healthcare networks are creating a constant need for compassionate, qualified support staff.

Information Technology: Helping Maryland Stay Connected

From remote work to online learning, technology touches everything and IT professionals keep it all running. Diploma holders can begin with Help-Desk Support, Computer Technician, or IT Assistant roles after completing short-term training or certification programs.

Skills & Credentials:

Why It’s Growing: As more businesses go digital, the demand for tech-savvy support continues to rise and Maryland’s proximity to tech hubs like D.C. makes this an especially strong sector.

Skilled Trades: Building Maryland’s Future

Electricians, HVAC technicians, and construction specialists keep Maryland running. Skilled trades offer hands-on work, strong pay, and apprenticeships that combine learning with earning. Many employers help pay for continued certifications or union training.

Apprenticeship or trade-school certification

Administrative & Office Support: The Heart of Every Organization

Behind every thriving business, nonprofit, or medical office is a strong administrative team. These roles are ideal for organized, people-oriented professionals who enjoy supporting others. Positions like Administrative Assistant, Receptionist, or Office Coordinator typically require a diploma, computer literacy, and strong communication skills.

Skills & Credentials:

Microsoft Office and data-entry proficiency

Going back to school as an adult can be both exciting and intimidating. Between family responsibilities, work, and classes, finding time to learn new technology might feel like one more thing on an already full plate. But developing technical skills isn’t just about keeping up—it’s about opening doors to better jobs and greater confidence in the modern workplace.

At Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake and The Excel Center, we see every day how mastering the right tools can change a person’s career path. Whether you’re returning to school after a few years or starting a new career entirely, here are some key skills and tools worth focusing on.

1. Computer and Digital Literacy

A strong foundation in basic computer use is essential for nearly every job today. Adult learners should feel comfortable navigating an operating system, organizing files, using email, and understanding basic online safety. Programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint—or their free counterparts like Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides—are must-haves in most office environments.

2. Communication and Collaboration Tools

The modern workplace runs on digital communication. Knowing how to use platforms like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Google Meet makes you a stronger collaborator and keeps you connected. Many employers also use project management tools such as Trello, Asana, or Slack to keep teams organized. Practicing these while in school can make the transition to a professional environment much smoother.

3. Data and Organization Skills

Even if your job isn’t directly related to data, being able to collect, organize, and interpret information is valuable. Familiarity with spreadsheets, basic formulas, and data entry practices can help you stand out. Google Sheets or Excel are excellent tools for tracking grades, budgeting, or even organizing family schedules—skills that translate directly into managing workplace projects.

4. Digital Research and Information Literacy

Today’s world is full of information—but not all of it is reliable. Learning how to find, evaluate, and apply credible sources online is a critical skill, both in school and on the job. Many employers value team members who can research effectively, think critically, and bring verified insights to the table.

5. Online Learning and Adaptability

Technology changes fast, and the ability to keep learning is one of the most important professional skills you can develop. Becoming comfortable with online learning platforms such as Google Classroom, Blackboard, or Canvas helps you adapt quickly to the training and digital systems many companies now use.

6. Professional Presence and Digital Etiquette

Knowing how to present yourself professionally online—through email communication, social media, and virtual meetings—matters just as much as your technical ability. From writing a clear email to maintaining a professional LinkedIn profile, your digital presence helps employers see your potential.

Putting It All Together

Many of the platforms and skills you’ll use as a student—Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, and even social media—are the same ones you’ll rely on in your career. Every assignment, group project, or online class is a chance to build confidence in tools you’ll use again in the workplace.

Goodwill’s Excel Center is more than a school—it’s a launchpad. By focusing on developing these technical skills now, adult learners can step into the workforce ready to thrive in today’s fast-paced, digital world.

At the Goodwill Excel Center in Baltimore, students are gaining much more than a high school diploma—they’re developing the personal and professional tools that help them thrive long after graduation. Among the most valuable of these tools are soft skills, often referred to as “people skills” or “employability skills.” While hard skills—like computer literacy, technical training, or certification—are essential for job performance, it’s the soft skills that often determine long-term success in the workplace.

What Are Soft Skills?

Soft skills are the interpersonal qualities that shape how individuals communicate, collaborate, and solve problems. They include traits like dependability, adaptability, empathy, teamwork, communication, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. These abilities help people build strong relationships, manage challenges effectively, and contribute positively to a team or organization.

For adult learners—many of whom are balancing jobs, families, and education—soft skills can be as important as academic knowledge. Employers consistently cite these attributes as key factors when hiring and promoting employees. A candidate who listens well, manages time effectively, and handles feedback gracefully often stands out as a leader.

How Students Develop Soft Skills

At the Goodwill Excel Center, soft skills are intentionally woven into the learning experience. Every class, project, and support interaction provides an opportunity to practice them. For example:

Classroom collaboration builds teamwork and communication, as students learn to share ideas, resolve differences, and support peers in group assignments.

Goal setting and accountability meetings with life coaches strengthen self-management and responsibility—two traits employers deeply value.

Career readiness workshops emphasize real-world communication, from crafting a professional email to preparing for interviews.

Community engagement and volunteer opportunities teach empathy and problem-solving in diverse social environments.

Instructors and success coaches work closely with students to recognize these strengths as they emerge, helping learners see how the skills they use in class can directly translate to professional settings.

Why Soft Skills Matter in the Workforce

In today’s rapidly changing job market, technical skills can become outdated as technology evolves—but soft skills endure. Employers across industries—from healthcare and hospitality to logistics and construction—look for individuals who can adapt to change, work collaboratively, and show up ready to learn.

For example:

Communication and teamwork help employees thrive in customer-facing roles and collaborative projects.

Critical thinking and adaptability are essential when tackling new technologies or unexpected challenges on the job.

Emotional intelligence enables workers to navigate conflict, build trust, and contribute to a positive workplace culture.

These traits also empower Excel Center graduates to not only secure employment but grow within their careers, pursue leadership roles, and model professionalism for others in their communities.

Lifelong Learning Beyond the Classroom

Soft skills development doesn’t stop at graduation—it’s a lifelong journey. The Goodwill Excel Center’s mission is to help students become confident, capable adults who continue learning, adapting, and leading in every stage of life. By mastering both academic and interpersonal skills, graduates leave with a solid foundation for success in today’s workforce—and the resilience to navigate whatever comes next.

Closing thought:
At the Goodwill Excel Center, education is about more than earning a diploma—it’s about unlocking potential. When students build confidence, communication, and compassion alongside academic achievement, they’re not just changing their own lives—they’re shaping a stronger, more connected Baltimore.

Summer is a season many of us look forward to—longer days, warmer weather, and a break from the usual routine. But for students at the Goodwill Baltimore Excel Center, summer can also be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a great time to rest and recharge. On the other, it’s easy to lose the academic momentum you’ve built all year.

So how do you stay motivated, focused, and energized—without burning out?

Here are some creative and doable ways to keep moving forward this summer, while still giving yourself the space to breathe and enjoy life.

1. Create a “Summer Success Bucket List”

Instead of just listing beach trips or cookouts, try adding a few academic or personal growth goals. Want to finally understand fractions? Knock out a career assessment? Update your résumé? Mix those in with fun stuff like trying a new recipe or visiting a local museum. This helps keep you balanced while giving your summer some structure.

2. Use Micro-Goals to Build Daily Wins

Don’t pressure yourself to study for hours each day. Break things into micro-goals: 15 minutes of reading, one math problem a day, or journaling for 10 minutes about your future goals. These bite-sized efforts help keep your brain engaged without overwhelming you.

Pro tip: Keep a whiteboard or sticky notes to track these wins—you’ll be amazed how motivating it is to see your progress.

3. Change Your Scenery (Even in Small Ways)

Studying in the same spot every day can make even the most dedicated student feel stuck. Switch it up by studying outside, visiting a local library, or listening to educational podcasts while walking around your neighborhood. A change of environment can spark new energy and focus.

4. Try the “One Thing” Rule

Ask yourself each morning: What’s one thing I can do today that brings me closer to my goal? It could be sending a thank-you email to a teacher, reading a chapter of your workbook, or even encouraging a classmate. One thing a day = 90+ steps forward by the time September rolls around.

5. Lean into What Excites You

Use summer to explore subjects that spark your interest. Love music? Learn about the science behind sound. Into fashion? Read about the history of textiles or sustainability in design. Learning doesn’t have to be limited to textbooks—it can be personalized and fun.

6. Stay Connected to Your Support Network

Motivation often fades in isolation. Stay in touch with your Excel Center classmates, teachers, or coaches. Even quick check-ins can remind you that you’re not in this alone—and that others are cheering you on.

Try forming a summer accountability group: a weekly text or call where you each share a goal and a win.

7. Remember: Rest Is Part of the Plan

Staying motivated isn’t about doing everything. It’s about doing the right things—and that includes rest. Set clear boundaries for downtime. Celebrate your progress. And know that breaks actually help your brain store and retain knowledge.

Burnout doesn’t build success. Balance does.

Final Thought: You’re Already Doing Something Incredible

As an adult student working to earn your diploma, you’re already showing strength, resilience, and commitment. Summer is just another chapter in your story—and you have the tools to make it a productive one.

So go ahead: chase your goals, enjoy the sunshine, and don’t forget to be proud of how far you’ve come.

Earning a high school diploma as an adult is a transformative accomplishment. It represents hard work, resilience, and a commitment to creating a better future. But the impact of completing your education extends far beyond the individual—it creates ripples of positive change for families, communities, and even local economies.

At the Goodwill Excel Center in Baltimore, Maryland, we see firsthand how one person’s decision to return to school inspires and uplifts those around them. Here’s how earning a diploma as an adult can create a lasting impact that benefits everyone.

1. Inspiring Families

When adults return to school and earn their diplomas, they set a powerful example for their children and loved ones. For many families, a parent’s educational journey becomes a source of inspiration and motivation. Children who see their parents prioritizing education are more likely to value their own schooling, creating a culture of learning within the household.

Earning a diploma also provides parents with the tools to better support their children’s education. From helping with homework to encouraging higher academic goals, the ripple effect starts at home, where knowledge and confidence fuel generational success.

2. Strengthening Communities

Communities thrive when their members are empowered to succeed. By earning a diploma, adult learners contribute to a stronger, more connected neighborhood. As they pursue better job opportunities and increase their earning potential, they also have the ability to give back to their communities—whether by volunteering, mentoring others, or supporting local businesses.

Educational achievements also promote a sense of pride and hope within communities, encouraging others to pursue their own goals. One graduate’s story can inspire countless neighbors to take that first step toward completing their education.

3. Driving Economic Growth

The economic benefits of earning a high school diploma ripple through local economies. Adults who complete their education gain access to higher-paying jobs, reducing reliance on social services and contributing to economic growth. This creates a more stable workforce and boosts local businesses, as individuals have more spending power to invest in their communities.

In Baltimore, industries like healthcare, technology, and skilled trades rely on a well-educated workforce. When adults earn their diplomas, they fill essential roles in these sectors, helping to drive economic progress for the city and beyond.

4. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Education is one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty. By earning a diploma, adults open doors to opportunities that were previously out of reach, providing a path to financial stability for themselves and their families.

This stability has a ripple effect that benefits entire communities. As families achieve financial independence, they contribute to a more equitable and thriving neighborhood, reducing economic disparities and fostering a sense of collective progress.

5. Fostering Hope and Resilience

Earning a diploma as an adult is a testament to perseverance and hope. It shows that it’s never too late to rewrite your story and achieve your dreams. This message resonates with families and communities, inspiring others to believe in their own potential and pursue their goals.

At the Excel Center, we’ve seen how one graduate’s journey can create a chain reaction of positive change. Their success story becomes a beacon of hope, reminding others that anything is possible with determination and support.

The Goodwill Excel Center: A Catalyst for Change

At the Goodwill Excel Center, we understand that education is a powerful force for personal and community transformation. That’s why we’re dedicated to helping adult learners succeed, offering resources like free on-site childcare, flexible scheduling, and Life Coaches to remove barriers and ensure every student can achieve their goals.

When one person earns their diploma, the benefits extend far beyond the individual. It’s an investment in families, communities, and the future.

Make a Difference Today

Earning your high school diploma is more than a personal achievement—it’s a gift to your family, your community, and yourself. If you’re ready to create a ripple effect of positive change, the Goodwill Excel Center is here to support you every step of the way.

Contact us today to start your journey and discover how one diploma can transform lives, build stronger communities, and inspire a brighter future for all.

When we think about learning, we often picture a classroom filled with students of the same age. But in today’s evolving educational landscape, intergenerational learning is challenging that tradition. This approach brings together learners from different age groups, creating an environment rich with shared experiences, diverse perspectives, and mutual growth.

At the Goodwill Excel Center, we believe learning is a lifelong journey, and every generation has something unique to offer. By fostering intergenerational connections, we’re building stronger communities and enriching the educational experience for everyone involved.

Learning Through Shared Perspectives

Younger and older learners bring unique life experiences and viewpoints to the classroom. For younger students, hearing the stories and wisdom of their older peers can provide valuable insights into resilience, perseverance, and adapting to life’s challenges.

At the same time, older students often draw inspiration from the energy and optimism of younger classmates, finding new ways to approach learning and problem-solving. This exchange of ideas and experiences creates a dynamic and engaging learning environment where everyone grows together.

Building Community and Breaking Barriers

Intergenerational learning fosters a sense of community by breaking down stereotypes and building mutual respect. Younger students learn to appreciate the challenges and triumphs of their older peers, while older students discover the creativity and fresh perspectives of younger generations.

This shared journey helps bridge generational gaps, creating meaningful relationships based on understanding and support. At the Excel Center, we see how these connections transform classrooms into collaborative communities where everyone feels valued.

Enhancing Education Through Collaboration

When learners of different ages work together, the educational experience becomes richer. Older students often bring practical, real-world knowledge that enhances classroom discussions, while younger students contribute fresh ideas and technological savvy.

Group projects, discussions, and problem-solving activities benefit from these diverse perspectives, leading to innovative solutions and deeper understanding. This collaborative approach mirrors real-world environments, where people of all ages work together to achieve common goals.

Fostering Empathy and Emotional Growth

Learning alongside people from different generations encourages empathy and emotional intelligence. Younger students gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges their older classmates have overcome, while older students are reminded of the importance of dreaming big and embracing new opportunities.

These interactions create a supportive atmosphere where students feel seen and understood, boosting confidence and emotional well-being. At the Excel Center, we’ve seen how intergenerational learning helps students not only achieve academic success but also grow personally.

Preparing for a Connected World

In today’s interconnected world, the ability to collaborate with people of different ages and backgrounds is more important than ever. Intergenerational learning equips students with the skills to navigate diverse workplaces and communities, making them more adaptable and effective in their personal and professional lives.

By participating in intergenerational education, students gain the tools they need to thrive in a world that values diversity and collaboration.

The Excel Center’s Role in Intergenerational Learning

At the Goodwill Excel Center, our classrooms are filled with adult learners of all ages, creating the perfect environment for intergenerational connections. Whether it’s a younger student inspiring their older classmate to try a new technology or an older student sharing life lessons that resonate deeply, these interactions are at the heart of our mission.

With flexible scheduling, supportive Life Coaches, and resources tailored to the needs of adult learners, the Excel Center ensures that every student, regardless of age, feels empowered to succeed.

Learning Together, Growing Together

Intergenerational learning isn’t just about earning a diploma—it’s about creating connections, fostering understanding, and growing as individuals and as a community. At the Goodwill Excel Center, we’re proud to provide a space where students of all ages can come together to share their stories, learn from one another, and build a brighter future.

If you’re ready to join a diverse community of learners and experience the transformative power of education, contact the Excel Center today. Together, we’re building stronger connections across generations—one classroom at a time.

When you think about the value of a high school diploma, you probably picture graduation caps flying and proud smiles. But did you know that this simple piece of paper has the power to reshape futures, especially when it comes to earning potential? Let’s explore how completing high school can unlock doors to better pay, steady jobs, and financial stability.

A Diploma’s Payday: The Numbers Don’t Lie

Let’s talk dollars and cents. On average, someone without a high school diploma earns around $682 a week—that’s $35,464 a year. Now, compare that to high school graduates who bring home about $852.50 weekly, adding up to $44,330 annually. That’s a 25% pay raise simply for completing high school!

Why such a big difference? A diploma isn’t just a piece of paper; it’s a key that unlocks access to better-paying jobs. Employers see it as proof of skills, discipline, and the ability to stick with something challenging—qualities that lead to higher wages.

Diploma = Better Job Security

Earning potential isn’t just about how much you make—it’s also about how often you make it. Unemployment rates tell a powerful story. Last year, nearly one in four (23.5%) people without a high school diploma were unemployed. Meanwhile, that number dropped to 15.8% for those who graduated high school.

Translation? With a diploma, you’re more likely to land—and keep—a job. Employers favor candidates with a high school education because it signals reliability and a basic skill set that can be built upon.

Stability: The Unsung Hero of Earning Potential

Beyond landing a job, a high school diploma boosts your chances of keeping it. Many entry-level jobs require at least a high school diploma as a minimum qualification. Without one, your options narrow, and you’re more likely to end up in unstable roles prone to layoffs.

Employers often associate diploma holders with stronger skills and a willingness to grow, making them more likely to invest in these employees long-term. And with job stability comes steady paychecks and financial peace of mind.

Hope for Those Who Didn’t Finish High School

Life happens, and not everyone has the opportunity to complete high school the first time around. But here’s the good news: It’s never too late for a second chance. Programs like the Goodwill Excel Center offer adults aged 21 and older the chance to earn their high school diploma.

This isn’t just about hitting the books again; it’s about changing lives. Graduates of programs like this one gain the confidence, qualifications, and earning potential to rewrite their stories and secure brighter futures.

Take the First Step

A high school diploma isn’t just about academics—it’s about empowerment. It opens doors to better paychecks, lower unemployment rates, and more stable job opportunities. If you or someone you know is ready to take that leap, programs like the Goodwill Excel Center are here to help.

Your second chance could be the start of something extraordinary. Why not take it?

One year ago, Baltimore adults without a high school diploma faced a very uncertain future. Thanks to Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake’s adult high school, known as the Excel Center, adults who chose to enroll have a new set of questions to ponder, starting with: “What’s next?”

From diving straight into the workforce to pursuing further education or exploring other avenues, there is no shortage of options to consider. Heading back to the workforce could bring a new sense of optimism for those who choose that route, as advancement opportunities that may not have previously existed are now attainable. Seeking further educational opportunities will open even more doors for these students.

But, education can mean many things: continuing on to college, attending a trade school and learning a technical skill, or enrolling in continuing education programs designed to further develop basic skills. What to choose? Let’s break it down:

Trade Skills: For anyone itching to get their hands dirty and dive into practical, hands-on work right away, learning trade skills could be their golden career ticket. Comprehensive training in high-demand fields like construction, automotive tech, or healthcare can provide certifications or licenses that are valuable to employers. This route also avoids the heavy weight of student loans while marching straight into potentially lucrative career paths. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake offers several technical education programs, including Pharmacy Technician and CNA training.

College Degrees: On the flip side, if a broader spectrum of career options and long-term earning potential is the goal, a college degree might be the next best step. Delving into fields like business, healthcare, or even a course of study in liberal arts where a variety of career areas are introduced can open up many opportunities. Pursuing a bachelors or higher degree might take more time and financial investment, but the payoff could be highly valuable growth, networking, and specialized knowledge. Also, starting any college course of study at a community college will help minimize the cost of education after high school.

How can adult learners decide which direction to pursue? They need to take a good, hard look at their priorities, passions, and where they see themselves down the road. They should consider factors like desired salary, job stability, and their big lifelong dreams.

However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Each individual is entitled to his or her own unique path.

The Baltimore Excel Center can help adult learners move in the right direction. The center offers personalized guidance, top-notch life coaches, and insider intel to help students navigate their educational choices and find your future calling. The Excel Center opens up a whole new world. Adults who dropped out of high school now have a second chance to learn, to make the most of the center’s resources — and to move ahead in life.

As a Goodwill Excel Center adult high school student, balancing classes with personal life can be a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. The Baltimore Excel Center’s unique approach to education is designed to help students achieve this balance. Here are some tips to help you navigate your responsibilities effectively while pursuing your high school diploma.

Create a Schedule

A well-structured schedule is your best friend. Use a planner or digital calendar to map out your classes, study time, work commitments, and personal activities. Stick to your schedule as much as possible but also allow some flexibility for unexpected events.

Set Clear Goals

Establishing clear, achievable goals is crucial. Define what you want to accomplish in your academic and personal life. Break these goals down into manageable steps and prioritize them. This will keep you focused and motivated.

Utilize School Resources

The Excel Center offers a variety of helpful resources to support its students. Take advantage of the life coaches, college and career counselors, and high quality instructors. The Excel Center also offeres support services for day-to-day needs like drop-in daycare, which enables students with children to attend classes knowing that their children are well taken care of in a safe environment. The Excel Center also recognizes that getting to and from school can sometimes be a barrier for students, so it provides transportation assistance to ensure that all students can make it to class. These resources create an environment where all students can thrive.

Communicate with the People Around You

Effective communication with family, friends, peers, and employers about your school commitments can reduce stress. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, studies show that low social support is connected to heightened stress reactivity, including elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, and exaggerated cardiovascular and neuroendocrine, or nervous system, responses to laboratory stressors. Communicating with those around you about your schedule can help you manage expectations and responsibilities.

Celebrate Achievements

Finally, take time to celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Recognizing your progress will boost your morale and motivate you to keep going. The simple practice of recording your progress will help you appreciate your small wins and build your confidence. According to the University of Minnesota, any accomplishment, no matter how small, releases the neurotransmitter dopamine, which boosts your mood, motivation, and attention. Whether it’s completing an assignment or acing a test, giving yourself credit for your hard work is worthwhile.

Balancing school and life as an Excel Center student requires planning, effort, and support. By creating a schedule, setting goals, and utilizing available resources, you can succeed in both and enjoy your educational journey.
