One year ago, Baltimore adults without a high school diploma faced a very uncertain future. Thanks to Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake’s adult high school, known as the Excel Center, adults who chose to enroll have a new set of questions to ponder, starting with: “What’s next?”

From diving straight into the workforce to pursuing further education or exploring other avenues, there is no shortage of options to consider. Heading back to the workforce could bring a new sense of optimism for those who choose that route, as advancement opportunities that may not have previously existed are now attainable. Seeking further educational opportunities will open even more doors for these students.

But, education can mean many things: continuing on to college, attending a trade school and learning a technical skill, or enrolling in continuing education programs designed to further develop basic skills. What to choose? Let’s break it down:

Trade Skills: For anyone itching to get their hands dirty and dive into practical, hands-on work right away, learning trade skills could be their golden career ticket. Comprehensive training in high-demand fields like construction, automotive tech, or healthcare can provide certifications or licenses that are valuable to employers. This route also avoids the heavy weight of student loans while marching straight into potentially lucrative career paths. Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake offers several technical education programs, including Pharmacy Technician and CNA training.

College Degrees: On the flip side, if a broader spectrum of career options and long-term earning potential is the goal, a college degree might be the next best step. Delving into fields like business, healthcare, or even a course of study in liberal arts where a variety of career areas are introduced can open up many opportunities. Pursuing a bachelors or higher degree might take more time and financial investment, but the payoff could be highly valuable growth, networking, and specialized knowledge. Also, starting any college course of study at a community college will help minimize the cost of education after high school.

How can adult learners decide which direction to pursue? They need to take a good, hard look at their priorities, passions, and where they see themselves down the road. They should consider factors like desired salary, job stability, and their big lifelong dreams.

However, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Each individual is entitled to his or her own unique path.

The Baltimore Excel Center can help adult learners move in the right direction. The center offers personalized guidance, top-notch life coaches, and insider intel to help students navigate their educational choices and find your future calling. The Excel Center opens up a whole new world. Adults who dropped out of high school now have a second chance to learn, to make the most of the center’s resources — and to move ahead in life.
