About

Operated by Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, The Excel Center provides support services such as on-site child-care, industry recognized certification courses, in addition to Goodwill’s menu of services.

The Excel Center is FREE and able to help remove barriers to education and empower individuals to achieve their goals.

The Excel Center award a high-school diploma to adult learners.  With the help of Life Coaches, College and Career Counselors, high quality instructors, and flexible scheduling, students can take advantage of a flexible, rigorous, and relevant program.

Understanding that many students may come into the program with varying skills having been out of the classroom for some time, our courses are designed to meet students where they are regardless of level. Students will progress and earn credits in eight-week terms held year-round.

The Excel Center Model

The Excel Center model began in 2010 with a single school in Indiana and now has grown to include 31 schools across eight states plus Washington, D.C. The growth of The Excel Center supports thousands of adults across the nation as they work to complete their high school education, increase their independence, and reach their potential. Overall, Excel Centers have now graduated more than 13,000 students since 2010. Attaining a high school diploma increases a person’s income by an average of $9,000 per year.

The Excel Center concept is unlike current adult education programs in Maryland.

This innovative model distinguishes itself by offering options to the GED and the National External Diploma Program. Through a blend of traditional high school course requirements students earn credentials that increase access to higher education, employment with higher wages and increased career prospects. Students are able to attend classes in the morning, afternoon and/or evening, 5 days a week, 12 months a year. The Excel Center addresses critical non-academic barriers to employment opportunity, such as transportation, childcare, reliable housing, mental and physical health.

Every student develops an individual learning plan based upon his or her unique interests and abilities, providing students the opportunity to connect the material they learn to skills that are helpful and necessary in future education, training and/or work environments. Remedial and basic high school course are balanced with tangible skills’ training that focuses on improving students’ employ-ability. Current relationships with community colleges and employer-based training programs will help leverage additional relationships and thus provide greater access for our students.
